A magnificent piece of pipe-smoking history, this antique clay pipe was crafted by the renowned L. Fiolet manufacture in Saint-Omer, France. A direct and fierce competitor to Gambier, Fiolet produced some of the finest clay pipes of the 19th and early 20th centuries, celebrated for their exceptionally pure white clay and exquisite craftsmanship.
While the Jacob design was one of the most celebrated and widely produced shapes of the 19th century, finding an un-dug, well-preserved example by L. Fiolet with its original factory enameling (Decore) so sharply intact is becoming increasingly difficult. Most examples found today have lost their colors or suffered heavy damage, making this clean, lightly smoked piece a standout addition to any collection.
This particular piece features the iconic, intricately detailed bearded "Jacob" character wearing a turban. In a fascinating marketing move against rival makers, this model features the rare and desirable stamping: "Je suis le beau Jacob" ("I am the beautiful Jacob").
An exceptional find for collectors of historical ephemera and antique tobacciana.
